Roof Racks - That’s Where Your Bike Belongs

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

The family that bikes together, stays together.

Whether you’re going on a trip by yourself or with your family, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t bring your bicycles along with you, and every reason why you should.

Why should I bring my bike when I could probably rent one wherever I go, you’ll be asking yourself.

Because bicycles that are offered for rent are often not of the best quality. They’re usually ‘beaters’ - just something on two wheels for people to get around. And if you’re used to your own bike you won’t enjoy tooling around on something of lesser quality.

There’s no room for a bike in my car with all my luggage, you’ll say next.

This is not a problem either. Invest in a roof bike rack. No need to worry that there’s no room for your bikes - just put them on top of your car in the rack. It may look odd to drive around with bikes standing on top of your car, but it’s aerodynamic, and the bikes are safer than they would be if they were in a rack at the back of your car, where a careless motorist could bump into them.

Another reason to bring your bikes with you on any trip is you’ll save the cost of renting bikes at your destination. Not only will these rental bikes not be very good, but they’ll cost everyone a daily fee, which you could better use to spend on food or souvenirs.

Roof Bike Racks Are Suitable for Near Trips as Well as Far

Even if you don’t plan on taking trips to distant places, a roof bike rack is still the way to go. No more having to take off the wheels to get the bike to fit in your trunk. No more worrying whether grease or dirt will stain the car’s interior. Just put the bike on the roof and away you go.

There are several brands of roof bike racks. Each one does require the installation of a multi-purpose roof rack “base system” which remains on top of your car even when you take the bikes off. However, since the rack base system is multi-purpose, you’ll also be able to carry not only bikes but skis, snowboards, canoes, and even cargo boxes.

Every bike rack system has issues that you need to be aware of.  For the roof rack, the important thing to remember that you actually have something tall strapped to the top of your car. You’ll have no problem going through tunnels, but if you have access to a garage, make sure the garage door is fully open before you try to drive in!

The Silver Eagle Dollar

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Due to a loss of revenue in America’s mines, Ronald Reagen signed two bills authorizing silver and gold coins to be made in 1985.

The Silver Eagle was the first silver bullion made dues to the new bills.  This beautiful coin was partly designed by Adolph A. Weinman using the original abverse design (from the walking liberty half dollar he designed).

Swiss Army Knife - Victorinox, Swiss Champ

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Hi, Bob with Knives Town here.  I’d like to do a review for you today on a knife that has become an icon in the knife world.  I’m talking about The Swiss Army knife, the Victorinox knife.  This is made by a company that has been in business for over 100 years, they’ve been producing these kind of knives since 1897, so they are indeed the original multi tool.  The knife comes in a sleek silver box like this, this particular model that I’m looking at is the Swiss Champ, one of the higher-end models in the Swiss Army knife line.  I believe personally it’s the best value for the money, it gives you the most tools for the money.

The knife comes with a pamphlet, that shows all of the different tools, and implements that are available in the knife and further information and warranty and care of the knife and so forth.  The Knife comes in the box with a plastic cut-out to prevent it from rolling around during shipping. The knife is 3 and half inches wide, and it’s a very descent weight.  It’s got 33 tools on it, so I’ll try to move quickly here.

Starting at this end here with the blade portions.   It’s got a pen blade, that the smaller blade, for your small chores.  And then we’ve got the large blade, which is about 3 inches long, and that’s your main blade.  The steel that’s used by the Victorinox is a very high grade stainless mirror polished, and it reminds me of the true-sharp surgical steel that Case uses on their knives, if you’re familiar with that, very similar to that.

Wearing the Right ATV Gear Can Save Your Life

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

In an ATV race, winning is important, staying focused is too…but more importantly, safety is the MOST important fact to remember. However, there is a small margin of error whereby sometimes our impulsiveness and need to win will take over our brains for a while and it could be that defining moment that we make a judgment that is wrong. With said that, we strongly encourage all ATV riders to always, always, ALWAYS use high quality ATV gears, like the Thor MX Gear. Never for one moment, take your life for granted, irregardless of how much we wish we would ride without an ATV helmet or without our jerseys and protective gear.

Most ATV Gears today are made of durable quality and they come in many different varieties of designs and options and is extremely affordable too. Realizing the importance of safety in the world of ATV riding and with the ever increasing number of riders in the world, many ATV accessories companies have expanded their ATV gear line over the past few years. Now leading ATV gear companies offer many designs and options for men, women, children and home accessories as well.

Among all of the ATV gears, we think that ATV enthusiasts should at least own a ATV helmet and make it a point to wear the helmet whenever they are on the ATV. It shouldn’t matter if the ride is only for 5 minutes or 5 hours. As long as you’re getting on the ATV, you have to have your ATV Helmet on. Although not all states in the US enforce this rule, we should make it a point to put on our ATV helmet for the sake of our own safety.

We cannot place more importance of encouraging young ATV riders to wear their ATV gear and helmet whenever they ride their ATV. But it would work better if you wore it too – this would make it easier for them to keep to this rule.

If you don’t already have ATV gear, why not hop on over and check some of the ATV gear we have in store for you?

New Patio Furniture For Better Outdoor Living

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Outdoor patio furniture can define a new outdoor living space and provide you with quality outdoor time this season. Outdoor patio furniture comes as individual pieces and as complete sets. The material that the furniture is made from varies from plastic resins to teak and cedar. Key characteristics of outdoor furniture materials are durable and how hard it is to keep them clean. As you will see there are many choices available.

One of the most important components to a great outdoor living space is an outdoor patio dining set. The basic dining set consists of a dining table and chairs and more elaborate sets might add an umbrella that fits into the center of the table. Dining arrangements usually consist of 4, 6 or 8 chairs. You need to make sure the dining set fits your area so that you still have the ability to move around and enjoy the perimeter spaces. Smaller dining arrangements can be had with bistro sets which are 3 person tables and chairs that are usually elevated like bar stools.

Another good patio furniture set is a conversation set. These sets are all about casual seating and they are usually anchored with a two person love seat. Along with the love seat will come a pair of chairs and a center coffee table. Some sets will also include a side table or two that are height matched for the chairs. Supporting the comfy seating goals, cushions come with many sets and they make for a great opportunity to add additional style and color to your patio area.

A bar table and chairs are another option for supporting a dining and casual seating arrangement. These are smaller tables and chairs raised up to bar height and they create an intimate sitting arrangement. Another option is to get a full on bar unit that can be used as a mini-kitchen with a refrigerator and other beverage preparation options. Bar sets of this kind also come with bar stools that match the height of the counter top of the main bar unit.

Garden benches are another popular choice and the work well at the perimeter of your patio area or just about anywhere in your yard. Garden benches come in many different styles and materials but wood benches are some of the most popular. Teak wood garden benches have a very appealing look to them and they come in many different styles. You can also find benches build into other units such as arbors. A bench with storage for patio items may be a good choice as well.

Once you have an idea of the type of furniture you want, it is time to think about the type of material that the furniture is made from. Natural materials include wicker made from canes or switches and wood such as teak, cypress or cedar. Super strong and durable options include wrought iron and cast aluminum. Less expensive options, and often less durable, include plastic resin and thin walled aluminum tubing. Each of these options has their own style so it is important to choose the right type to match the rest of your home’s style.

Yes there are many options when it comes to choosing patio furniture. Start with choosing the types of furniture piece that you want, them move into balancing material versus costs to meet your style and budget goals. With just a little bit of research you should end up with patio furniture that will work well for you for many seasons.

Hair Conditioner Tips

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Hair conditioner is product that is supposed to improve the texture and appearance of human hair. Hair conditioners, unlike shampoos, bind to the hair and do not completely wash out in order to give the hair the desired appearance. Most people use this product because your hair is one thing you do not want squeaky clean. The real function of a good hair conditioner is to treat the hair after shampooing and help tame it for the next grooming process; combing, drying, curling, straightening etc.

Conditioners, similar to shampoos, come in various forms. Again you can find products specific to the result you are looking for. Although the original purpose of hair conditioners was to just help detangle clean hair, you can now get one that will solve one of the many problems you may have. Do you need a moisturizer? reconstructer? detangler? glosser? thermal protector? Do you have coarse? super curly? very dry? very fine? thinning? frizzy? or colored? hair. There is a product out there for you! Just remember the conditioner is leaving product on your hair, whether it is a lot for dry hair or light for fine hair, to give it the appearance of luster and gloss.

If you have curly, coarse, dry or damaged hair, try to condition every time you shampoo or wet your hair. Obviously a moisturizing conditioner would be best for you. You may also want to consider deep conditioners. Fine or limp hair can actually do without any conditioner. You may just need a detangler if that is your problem. If you do use a conditioner be sure to apply it only to the ends to mid shaft of your hair. This will prevent a greasy oily look you want to avoid.

Tips

- For best results, apply hair conditioner to wet hair after you have squeezed out most of the water.

- Take some conditioner in your hands and work it through your hair. For normal hair start half way up the shaft and pull through to the ends. For a dry scalp or very dry and damaged hair use it on the entire length of your hair including the scalp.

- Rinse out conditioner with cool, not warm or hot, water to get a shiny mane.

- Cover your hair with conditioner right before a swim to protect it from the harsh pool chemicals.

Shower Curtain Cleaning Tips

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Nobody wants to be taking a shower or a bath, cleaning themselves up, only to look up and see a dirty, scummy shower curtain. Unfortunately, your shower curtain is going to get dirty. Being in such damp conditions and with such soap scum build up – well, you’re going to have a dirty shower curtain on your hands. Luckily, there are some things that you can do to clean up your shower curtain.

You can wash your shower curtain in your basic everyday clothes washer. Just use about 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of bleach. Then add white towels and a regular amount of your normal laundry detergent and run the machine. Also use some liquid fabric softener. Do not run your machine on hot – plastic shower curtains could melt.

When you’re done washing your shower curtain, do not place it in the dryer (again, it could melt). Instead, simply hang it up in its regular place on the shower rod and let it drip dry.

No matter what your shower curtain is made out of, fabric, vinyl, or plastic, you can stick it in the washing machine with a cup of baking soda instead of bleach and vinegar. It is also a good idea to read the label on your shower curtain to check for any warnings or suggestions.

If you soak your shower curtain in salt water, it will prevent mildew (although, it could leave small crystals on your curtain if you use too much salt). Before hanging shower curtains, soak in vinegar or salt water solutions to prevent mold and mildew. To remove mold and mildew, wash in hot soapy water with a little bit of bleach. For plastic curtains, clean with laundry pre-wash spray. Spray along the top, letting it run down to cover the curtain. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, then rinse it off.

Family Camping Tents - How to Choose the Right One

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

An important aspect of an enjoyable camping experience is having the right family tent. Camping is one of the most fun outdoor activities, but using the wrong tent can dampen the whole experience.

There are some questions that you should ask yourself in order to ensure that you choose the perfect tent for both you and your family.

First of all, a basic but important question to answer is how many people will be using the tent? This will determine the right style and size that you need.

You might even want to consider buying a tent slightly bigger than what you need. For example, if you need a tent for 5, consider buying a 6 person tent. That way you should have plenty of room for everyone.

What kind of conditions should the tent be able to handle? Will you be camping in the summer? Spring and summer? Or will you camp year round? You want to purchase a tent that can handle the various conditions you’re likely to encounter.

There are family camping tents made mostly for fair weather and there are 3 or 4 season family tents.

How often will the tent be used? You want a durable family tent if you’re planning on camping frequently. If you’re camping with very active children, you definitely want a durable tent!

How much interior space do you want or need? If you want to be comfortable, you need to take sleeping space and storage into account. Do you want standing room? Consider buying a family dome tent.

Will you be hiking or backpacking? You should look for a lightweight tent that you can easily transport.

Shapes And Styles

Family camping tents are available in different shapes and can be small enough for 3 and large enough to hold 10+.

Family Cabin Tents

Cabin tents can be sectioned off to create two or more rooms and usually allow multiple entry and exit points.

Dome Style Family Tents

The rounded shape of a family dome tent adds strength, good wind resistance and good interior space.

A-Frame Style Tents

A-frame tents have a simple, lightweight design. They’re usually freestanding and easy to set up. There’s good room at the floor but less room up top for standing.

Umbrella Style Tents

Umbrella style tents have spacious head and floor space, can hold many people, and have good ventilation.

Different Season Tents

There are 2, 3 and 4 season family camping tents.

Two season tents are fair weather tents that are usually very inexpensive.

Three season tents are the most popular and are able to handle rain.

Four season tents have heavier construction to fight off wind stress and snow loads. They’re made of higher grade fabrics and contain more poles for added strength.

Four season tents can possibly feel hot and heavy if used in moderate weather.

Shop from a variety of family tents - you’ll find smaller 3 person tents and larger 7+ person tents
